Jesús was an exchange student from Mexico, studying at  UBC. He came to us with a passion for working with kids, but almost no environmental knowledge. At the start of the summer his ecological footprint was very high (higher than any camper and almost 3 times the Canadian average!). As he began to become more involved with the activities and more familiar with the material, he started to see how important the issues were.

By the end of the summer, he had started bringing his lunches in Tupperware, switched to organic produce, and even staggered his showers. While Jesús’ personal commitment to change has been huge, he has also been sharing the information with people in his residence and plans to do the same with his friends and family back in Mexico. His family has been asking what they can do to change their own lifestyles.

Featured Volunteers

Hailing from the east coast (New Brunswick), Lindsay moved to Victoria in 2005 to begin her Masters in Cultural Anthropology and fell in love with the active lifestyle, natural beauty and vibe of Vancouver Island. She currently works for the Ministry of Environment, pursuing her passion for environmental management and stakeholder engagement. Lindsay likes to spend her weekends exploring the wonders of BC through hiking, camping, kayaking, and any new activity or sport that comes her way.

Leigh is from Vancouver and works as an interior designer. Her favorite of the three Rs is Reuse -- she loves to take old things and find new ways to use them. Leigh had an awesome time being the biggest kid at the Vancouver FUN Camps in 2010, and met so many inspiring young environmentalists! She can't wait for Summer 2011. Yay!
